The growing threat of marine litter:
from marine observations and knowledge to concrete actions towards solutions

The International Summer School "Plastic Marine Litter" is organized within the framework of the Graduate Program in Environmental Sciences, offered by the Graduate School of the University of Nova Gorica in conjunction with the IPA Adriatic funded DeFishGear (Derelict Fishing Gear Project in the Adriatic Sea) Project.

The International School will be held in Nova Gorica, Slovenia, during the period from June 11th to June 24th, 2015.


The International School is targeted to students at post-graduate level, who have future research and professional interests in the field of marine litter pollution and other related environmental issue. Participants will have the opportunity to intensively interact with an international team of experts on marine environmental sciences, as well as to present and discuss their study and research interests.


We have invited distinguished scientists and lecturers from across Europe, who will provide a holistic take on the issue of marine litter, offering lectures in the areas of marine environment and pollution; monitoring and assessment of marine litter, with emphasis on plastics, in the different environmental compartments; identification and characterization of plastics components; marine litter impacts on biota including exposure pathways, toxicity mechanisms; management frameworks and strategies.

The International School will be comprised of a balanced mix of intensive lectures, hands on laboratory, field excursion and moderated discussion to foster an engaging learning experience.

The Master students will be able to earn 4 ECTS credits for completion of the International Summer School. The PhD students will receive a certificate of attendance.
